Tapered Roller Bearings

Tapered roller bearings use cone-shaped rollers that run between angled surfaces in the inner and outer rings. This design allows them to carry radial loads across the shaft and axial loads along it at the same time. A single-row tapered roller bearing supports axial load in one direction. When thrust can act in either direction, the equipment may use two bearings mounted opposite each other or a suitable double-row design.

Where Are Tapered Roller Bearings Used?
Tapered roller bearings are used where a rotating assembly must support both a load across the shaft and a force along it. Typical applications include industrial gearboxes, automotive differential pinion shafts, truck and trailer wheel ends, and rolling mills.
For a truck wheel bearing, confirm the axle position and whether the equipment calls for separate inner and outer bearings or a hub bearing unit. For a gearbox or differential, start with the original bearing reference and check the manufacturer’s specifications for the mounting arrangement and bearing setting.

Tapered Roller Bearing Types:

Single-row tapered roller bearings consist of two separable parts: the cone assembly, which includes the inner ring, rollers and cage, and the cup, which is the outer ring. The two parts can be mounted separately. In adjustable arrangements, follow the equipment manufacturer’s procedure for setting endplay or preload during installation.
Double-row tapered roller bearings can support axial loads in both directions and are used in applications such as industrial gearboxes and wheel-end assemblies. Four-row tapered roller bearings are designed for specialized applications such as rolling mill roll necks. The correct arrangement depends on the equipment design, load direction and space available.
