A universal joint — also known as a U-joint, cardan joint, or Hooke’s joint — is one of those components most people don’t think about until it fails. It’s the coupling that connects two rotating shafts that aren’t perfectly aligned, allowing power to flow smoothly between them even as the angle between those shafts changes during operation. In a rear-wheel-drive or four-wheel-drive vehicle, the universal joint sits between the gearbox and the rear axle differential, linking them through the propeller shaft (driveshaft). Every time the suspension moves — going over a bump, turning a corner, accelerating hard — that joint flexes to accommodate the changing angle while keeping torque flowing to the wheels without interruption. How Does a Universal Joint Work?

 

The joint is built around a cross-shaped piece called a spider or cross yoke. This cross has four arms (trunnions), and each arm sits inside a small cup packed with needle roller bearings. Two opposing arms connect to one shaft’s yoke; the other two connect to the second shaft’s yoke. This arrangement lets the joint rotate in two planes at once, accommodating the angle between the shafts while transmitting torque.

Universal Joint Components :

 

A standard universal joint assembly consists of the following parts:

Spider / Cross Yoke :

The central cross-shaped element that forms the pivot point of the joint. Made from case-hardened alloy steel to withstand continuous torsional stress.

Needle Roller Bearings :

Packed into each bearing cup, these small cylindrical rollers reduce friction and support the radial loads on each trunnion arm. The quality of the needle bearings is one of the biggest factors separating a long-lasting joint from a short-lived one.

Bearing Cups (Caps) :

The four small cylindrical housings that encase the needle bearings and fit into the yoke bores. Precision-machined for a correct interference fit.

Snap Rings / Circlips :

Retain the bearing cups inside the yoke. Must be fitted correctly during installation to prevent the cups working loose under load.

Grease Nipple (Zerk Fitting) :

Present on re-greasable joints, this port allows grease to be injected directly into the bearing assembly. The MCB brand universal joint is supplied with a grease nipple as standard.

Input and Output Yokes :

The forked end pieces that attach to each shaft and house the spider cross. Available in various configurations including solid yoke, slip yoke, and flange yoke depending on the application.
